Homeowners will pay the price when Trump eliminates the Department of Education
The Republican war on public education has reached its most dangerous stage. Abolishing the Department of Education has been a right-wing goal since the 1960s, when desegregation threatened their power.
Now, under Trump’s directive and with Elon Musk slashing billions from the budget, Secretary of Education Linda McMahon is set to shut it all down.
But what does this mean for American schools? Rural and low-income schools, students with disabilities, and charter programs will be left to fend for themselves. Federal funding that supports millions of students - especially in struggling rural districts - will vanish. West Virginia will lose $800 million. Montana, $500 million. Mississippi, $1 billion. Missouri, $2 billion. Arizona, $3 billion.
Where will schools get the money to stay open? With federal funds gone, local property taxes will skyrocket, devastating homeowners - especially seniors on fixed incomes.
Meanwhile, corporate-backed, for-profit charter schools will drain even more resources from public education, widening disparities.
The attack on education is not about efficiency - it’s about control. Defunding public schools forces communities into privatized systems that prioritize profit over students.
Trump and his allies don’t care about the consequences. But millions of families, teachers, and students will be left to suffer. The fight for public education is a fight for democracy itself.
